Repair or Replace Your AC? How to Decide in North Texas
Nobody wants to replace an air conditioner if a repair will do, and nobody wants to keep paying for repairs on a system that is on its last legs. North Texas is hard on equipment, with long cooling seasons and a lot of runtime, so this decision comes up often. Here is the framework we use.
Start with age
Most residential systems last roughly 12 to 15 years, sometimes a little less in a hot climate with heavy use. If your system is under about 8 years old, repair is almost always the right call. If it is past 12, the question gets real, and a major repair deserves a second look.
Check the refrigerant
- R-22 (older systems, generally installed before 2010). Production of R-22 ended in 2020. What is available is reclaimed, and it is expensive. A refrigerant leak on an R-22 system is usually the point where replacement makes more sense than repair.
- R-410A (most systems from roughly 2010 on). Still widely serviced and available. Newer equipment is moving to lower-impact refrigerants, but your existing R-410A system can be repaired normally.
Compare the repair to the replacement
Two rules of thumb help. First, if a single repair costs more than about half the price of a new system, replacement deserves serious thought. Second, if the system is already old and needs repeated repairs in a short stretch, you are likely to keep paying. Neither rule is perfect, which is why we give you the numbers instead of a push.
Not every repair is a signal to replace. A failed capacitor, contactor, or fan motor on an otherwise healthy system is a routine repair that gets you years more service.
What else is worth weighing
- Are your energy bills rising for no clear reason?
- Does one part of the house never get comfortable, even after the system runs all day?
- Is the system noisy, short-cycling, or freezing up repeatedly?
How we handle it
Start with the $89 diagnostic. We tell you what is wrong, what the repair costs, and whether we think it is worth doing. If replacement is the better value, we will say so and quote it. Replacement quotes are free, and there is no pressure to decide on the spot.
